Lunch at a Miwa somen (thin wheat noodle) restaurant nearby. End the day with a celebratory yakiniku dinner.

Japan's oldest shrine — Mt. Miwa is the deity, no honden (main hall) is needed. Free entry. Mountain ascent (Mt. Miwa, 467m) requires registration but is highly recommended for spiritual experience. 30 min by car from Mikazuki.

11:301 hr

Walk part of Yamanobe-no-michi — Japan's oldest road, a 16 km pilgrimage path connecting ancient shrines and burial mounds. Start at Hasedera Temple (peonies in May, autumn leaves in Nov), then descend through countryside to a yakiniku dinner. The route most often called "the heart of Yamato" by repeat visitors.

09:302 hr

Famous for 7,000 peonies in spring (late April to mid-May) and red maple leaves in autumn. The 399-step covered staircase ascending the temple is iconic. ¥500 admission. 25 min by car from Mikazuki.

12:003.5 hr
Yamanobe-no-michi (light hike)山の辺の道

Japan's oldest documented road. We recommend the southern segment — Hasedera area to Sakurai (4–6 km, 2–3 hours of walking). Pass burial mounds, ancient shrines, and rural farms. Bring water; modest snacks at small farm stands.

15:301 hr

Optional stop — sample dango (sweet rice dumplings) and other Japanese sweets in this small castle-town district. Several decades-old confectioneries. Walk 15 min from Sakurai Station.
